Portal 2 Causes Controversy Over “Adoption” Joke

P0rtal 2 was greeted with positive feedback from both gamers and critics; however, one North Carolina father is quite upset with the in-game jokes poking fun at adoption. Warning, a very mild Portal 2 spoiler is ahead....

Portal 2’s main character, Chell is toyed with during many portions of the game. In one section, the character Wheatley says, “Alright, fatty. Adopted fatty. Fatty, fatty, no parents.” GLaDos responds to the remark saying, “For the record, you are adopted, and that's terrible, but just stick with me."

The man from North Carolina was playing the game with his 10-year-old adopted Chinese daughter and was appalled by the joke within the game. "If you're not an adoptive parent, it's probably not that big a deal to you," said Neal Stapel. "If you are an adoptive parent, it was, literally, the worst thing I could possibly have heard."

According to the report conducted by WBTV, a CBS affiliate out of Charlotte, North Carolina, Stapel’s daughter Marsha did not hear the quote from the game. However, Stapel stated, “It throws the question, the most ultimate question that child is ever going to have for you, and it just throws it right in your living room.” Though Stapel was angered by the joke, he stills finds the game an enjoyable experience. At this time, Valve has not responded to the incident. Be sure to check out the news report after the jump!

Microsoft offers free Xbox 360 with back-to-school PC, professors shake their gray, uncool heads

With only the best interests of its younger customers at heart, Microsoft has a new back-to-school promotion: starting May 22, college students buying a new Windows 7 PC can also get a free Xbox 360 4GB console. That's right, free -- as long as your new computer cost at least $699 and came from Redmond or one of its partners, including HP and Dell. Online ordering will require a .edu email address, which even attendees of the School of Life know how to procure; if you'd rather shop at Best Buy or a Microsoft Store, you'll need an actual student ID. This isn't about convincing students they need more than a tablet computer, of course. It's about about giving them the opportunity to be popular. "Get ready to be the coolest kid on your dorm floor with a killer new Windows 7 PC and an Xbox 360 -- all you really need for college," the company says. Yes, being the coolest kid on your dorm floor: pretty much the definition of Higher Education.
