Last month the gaming world called in sick. It was just too much. There were too many games to play and something had to give and that something was work. There will always be work, but video games have to be played when they're released - before they get moldy or something.
How's June look? Well, it looks like June might continue the slump in worker productivity that started in May.
Get your debit cards ready and work on your fake cough. Here are some of the top game releases in June:
Red Faction: Armageddon  releases June 7 for the PC, Xbox, and PS3
Did anyone think Red Faction was a great game? Eh, it was okay. Maybe a little better than okay. At the least, it was good enough to earn itself a sequel.
Prediction: Red Faction: Armageddon will be a little better than the original, but still not a great game.
inFAMOUS 2 releases June 7 only on the PS3
Times are hard over at Sony. DC Universe Online was a fail, PS3 sales are giving up ground to the Xbox faster than Kirstie Alley gives up on her diet, and, oh, there's that whole Playstation Network debacle thingy.
The first inFAMOUS was both successful and critically acclaimed. Will inFAMOUS 2 be a bright spot in Sony's bleak year and pump some life into flagging PS3 sales?
Prediction: No. Look for inFAMOUS 3 on the Xbox.
Alice: Madness Returns releases June 14 for the PC, Xbox, and PS3
For lots of reasons, none of them good ones, there's a serious dearth of female leads in gaming. Welcome back, Alice. Gamers missed you.
Maybe when Alice: Madness Returns rings up monstrous gaming bucks, the corporate shills will get that gamers don't care what sex their heroes are as long as they're fun to play.

The 5 Best Selling Video Games of 2011: Gamers Get Off the Couch

Quickly, now. Name one of the top 5, best-selling video games of 2011. Any one will do. Go ahead.
Did you say Dragon Age II? Nope. Wrong answer. That one's wide of the mark. Killzone, maybe? That's a little closer. Call of Duty. Ohhhh. Almost. Still no, though.
The top 5 best-selling games of 2011 through April according to VGChartz are:

  1. Pokemon Black/White Version for the DS.
Go ahead and laugh, but Pokemon rules.
  2. Kinect Adventures (X360)
  3. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
  4. Wii Sports (Wii)
  5. Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
Activision-Blizzard's Call of Duty for the 360 squeaks in at position 6*. Killzone comes in at 7 and Dragon Age 2 is all the way down the chart at number 18. (And, by the way, if you're one of those traditionalists still doing all your gaming on a PC, PC video game sales barely register on the charts. Consoles rule.)
Have been you looking down your nose at the Wii? Not what you'd call gaming?
Well, you better get off the sofa, tubby. The Wii changed everything and the Microsoft has joined the game. Those silly little Wii controllers have brought a whole lot of new people into gaming and they're not sitting on the sofa pew-pewing. They're dancing and bowling and playing tennis. They feel directly involved in the game they're playing.
Were you wondering why Microsoft introduced the Kinect? The answer is in those charts. Steve Ballmer and the rest of the Microsoft cabal might be soulless monopolists, but they're not fools.
There's no arguing  with success, and there's no denying the Wii has been monumentally successful. The Xbox 360 Kinect is going to take all those people who might look down their nose at motion gaming and bring them into the fold.

Soon, you might never think of sitting on the couch, again. The horror. The horror. Next thing you know, they'll make you go outside. In the sunlight. Ugh.
*The analytical types, also known at nit-picking know-it-alls, will notice we cheated a little. Game sales are based on the specific platforms, such as the Wii or the X360. If you combine, Call of Duty's sales across the X360, PS3, and PC, it assumes a a nice solid position just behind Pokemon at number 2.
