P0rtal 2 was greeted with positive feedback from both gamers and critics; however, one North Carolina father is quite upset with the in-game jokes poking fun at adoption. Warning, a very mild Portal 2 spoiler is ahead....
Portal 2’s main character, Chell is toyed with during many portions of the game. In one section, the character Wheatley says, “Alright, fatty. Adopted fatty. Fatty, fatty, no parents.” GLaDos responds to the remark saying, “For the record, you are adopted, and that's terrible, but just stick with me."
The man from North Carolina was playing the game with his 10-year-old adopted Chinese daughter and was appalled by the joke within the game. "If you're not an adoptive parent, it's probably not that big a deal to you," said Neal Stapel. "If you are an adoptive parent, it was, literally, the worst thing I could possibly have heard."
According to the report conducted by WBTV, a CBS affiliate out of Charlotte, North Carolina, Stapel’s daughter Marsha did not hear the quote from the game. However, Stapel stated, “It throws the question, the most ultimate question that child is ever going to have for you, and it just throws it right in your living room.” Though Stapel was angered by the joke, he stills finds the game an enjoyable experience.
